We live in an environment that is increasingly polluted.

Air, water, residual agricultural chemicals (pesticides/herbicides) and unpleasant odours (food, bathroom, refrigerator, cigarette smoke and turbid indoor air odours) all contribute to our daily toxic load.

Most of the solutions developed by industry for ridding ourselves of these pollutants involves the use of additional chemicals, many of which increase our exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Of the five million regulated chemicals in the world, at least 20,000 are known to be carcinogenic or cancer causing agents.

In 1995, approximately 1.2 billion pounds were dumped on crop lands, forest, lawns and fields.

Worldwide, over 15,000 chemical compounds are incorporated into pesticides.

3 Even though many of these are herbicides / pesticides are banned in the U.S. they enter with imported food products such as coffee, fruits, vegetables and meats.

This importation of foods also includes other countries within the EEC.

As we eat foods with even low levels of pesticides or herbicides, over time we encounter bioaccumulation.

Many of these fat soluble carcinogens tend to accumulate in fatty tissue such as the brain, sexual organs and breasts.

It is little wonder that we see cancer on the rise in these areas of the body.

The Environmental Protection Agency has identified at least 55 pesticides that could leave carcinogenic residues in foods.

These EPA scientists have found that, at times, these residue totals can exceed 500% of the allowed daily intake.

4 What we all know is that the level of these chemical cocktails, and the length of exposure time can significantly increase cancer risks.

We routinely add chemicals such as chlorine, ammonia and fluoride compounds to our water.

In addition, our water often contains urine, estrogens, heavy metals, industrial waste, chemical residue, gasoline solvents, nitrites (from fertilizers), benzene, trichloroethylene and many other contaminants.

Consuming chlorinated water is associated with a 20 - 40% increase in the incidence of colon and rectal cancer according to a Norwegian study published in the Internal Journal of Epidemiology in 1992.

Another study conducted jointly at Harvard University and the Medical College of Wisconsin showed that drinking chlorinated water accounts for 15% of all rectal cancers and 9% of bladder cancers in the U.S.

Moreover, if people drink chlorinated water over a long period of time, their risk in contracting rectal cancer increases to 38% and the risk of bladder cancer increases to 21%.

5 Environmental Toxins
The environmental toxins which seem to cause the most health problems are pesticides, solvents and heavy metals.

The primary damage caused by solvents and pesticides is their disruption of neurological functions.

6 In addition to their neurotoxic effects, these compounds are profoundly immunotoxic and are often toxic to the endocrine system (hormonal system) as well.

7 The adverse effects are not just limited to these systems, but impact dermatological (skin), gastrointestinal, genitourinary, respiratory, musculoskeletal and cardiac problems.

In 1976, the EPA initiated a study called the National Human Adipose Tissue Survey (NHATS).

In this study, adipose tissue samples were taken from cadavers (dead people) and elective surgeries from all regions of the United States and the levels of 54 toxins were measured. The results were nothing short of alarming.

Five of the chemicals - OCDD (a dioxin), styrene, 1,4- dichlorobenzene, xylene and ethylphenol - were found in 100% of all of the samples.

Another nine chemicals - benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, ethylbenzene, DDE, three dioxins and one furan - were found in 91-98% of all samples.

8. PCBs were found in 83% of all samples and beta-BHC was found in 87%.

A total of 20 toxic compounds were found in 76% or more of all samples.

9. There is no question that several decades of exposure in our air, food and water has left us surrounded by environmental toxins.

a) You can practice limiting your exposure to these chemicals by eliminating as many chemicals as possible from your household use,

Yes, remember that for something to kill or clean something it is usually chemical based.
